Rebuilding After Divorce: Expert Insights from Divorce Coach India Kern
In this month’s expert feature, Certified Divorce Coach India Kern shares how to turn disruption into growth—with practical insight on co-parenting, healing, support networks, and the business side of divorce.
When it comes to navigating the emotional, logistical, and financial complexities of divorce, the right guidance can make all the difference. I recently spoke with India Kern, Certified Divorce Coach and author of Surviving the Unwanted Divorce, to explore the deeper side of this life transition.
“Divorce Is More Than a Legal Process—It’s a Personal Reinvention” – India Kern
In our conversation, India shares grounded wisdom on everything from choosing the right mediator to building a post-divorce support system—and she doesn’t shy away from the hard truths about healing and personal growth. Whether you’re going through a divorce, supporting someone who is, or simply interested in human resilience, India shares how a divorce coach helps improve divorce with her powerful, practical, and deeply human insights.
1) If you could only choose one quality in your divorce mediator, which would you prioritize?
While both empathy and financial expertise matter, I place a strong emphasis on the importance of a mediator’s financial knowledge. Empathy is essential—no one wants to work with a mediator who’s emotionally tone-deaf during such a vulnerable time—but when you sit down at the mediation table, you’re essentially finalizing a complex financial transaction. This is the business side of divorce, and the long-term impact of those decisions makes financial expertise non-negotiable.
2) What advice do you have for single parents looking to build a strong support system and sense of community after divorce—while also maintaining a healthy and collaborative co-parenting relationship?
Research shows that couples who mediate tend to have healthier co-parenting relationships post-divorce—and that strong foundation matters. After divorce, building a new support network takes effort, but it’s essential. Community is everything. Friendships often shift, which can feel like another loss, but it’s also an opportunity to create deeper, more loyal connections. It may require stepping outside your comfort zone—but the reward is a circle of support that truly has your back.

𝟯) What role do support groups play in helping individuals navigate the emotional landscape of divorce, and what unique benefits have you seen them provide during the healing journey?
Support groups are incredibly valuable because they remind you that you’re not alone. I used to lead DivorceCare, a structured support group specifically for people navigating divorce. I saw firsthand how helpful it was for members to hear others going through the same struggles. There’s comfort in shared experience—it normalizes the pain and provides perspective. Healing begins when people feel seen, heard, and supported.
4) In your work with clients navigating divorce, how important is self-reflection and do you find that healing becomes harder for clients who focus only on blaming their ex?
Responsibility and accountability are often the hardest parts of the divorce process—but they’re essential. I encourage clients to take ownership because it takes two people to build a marriage and two people to unwind it. Recovery depends on self-agency. When someone stays stuck in blame or a victim mentality, the healing process is much longer. But when they begin to understand their role in the breakdown, they gain the power to create something better on the other side.
