What Is A Certified Divorce Financial Analyst And How Can They Help You Achieve A Successful Divorce – Scott Levin Esq CDFA

Scott Levin, San Diego family law attorney and founding partner of San Diego Divorce Mediation & Family Law recently sat down for a zoom interview with Tanya Aure. Ms. Aure and Mr. Levin are both Certified Divorce Financial Analysts and they work to help people during divorce from a financial perspective.

In February 2024, Scott Levin wrote in-depth about the benefits of mediating with a financial expert on White Coat Investor.

This video will provide insight into how parties in litigation and mediation can utilize the skills and experience of a CDFA® to help produce a fair and equitable settlement of their assets and debts.

What is a CDFA

The role of the CDFA® professional is to assist the client and his/her lawyer/mediator to understand how the financial decisions he/she makes today will impact the client’s financial future. A Certified Divorce Financial Analyst specializes in financial planning and advice tailored to the unique circumstances of divorce. With specialized expertise and training, a CDFA is able to help navigate you through the monetary maze of divorce.

Working with a CDFA During Your Divorce

A CDFA can determine the separate and community values of assets that are both separate and community or identify the right of one party to be reimbursed for use of separate funds for a community asset, and can create reports that explain and justify their conclusions.

One example of how a CDFA can help is by analyzing a 401k which existed before marriage and continued to receive contributions during marriage. This results in the asset having both separate and community values which the CDFA can identify through their work.

Another example for a home that is purchased by using funds that existed before marriage or that were gifted to one party, which can  result in that party seeking to recoup the funds at the time of divorce. A CDFA can analyze the purchase to determine the values of shared and separate values.

Why Choose a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst

To best meet the needs of a divorcing client a blend of these two ideologies is needed. To meet this need a new professional designation was created – the Certified Divorce Financial Analyst®. The role of the CDFA® is to help both client and lawyer in litigation or the client and mediator in mediation better and fully understand how the financial decisions made today will impact the client’s financial future, based on certain assumptions. At San Diego Divorce Mediation and Family Law, our certified divorce financial analyst is a uniquely trained divorce financial expert who can help provide insight through financial planning as a means of reaching a more equitable divorce settlement. Although emotions run high during divorce, it is essential to analyze the marriage as if it were a financial contract, and a CDFA® is uniquely suited to do so.

With a team of experts to help guide you throughout the divorce, you can set yourself up for a successful outcome. This video will provide additional insight as to the benefits of engaging a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst and we hope that you take a look or listen to gain a better understanding of why you should consider engaging Ms. Aure or Mr. Levin in this capacity. There are so many benefits to doing just this.
